LSR Molding: Extreme Heat and Chemical Resistance

0

Liquid Silicone Rubber used to mean baby bottle nipples and keyboard seals. That era is over. LSR now survives continuous exposure at 200 degrees Celsius, maintains flexibility at -50 degrees Celsius, and resists biodiesel, engine coolants, steam, and UV radiation without hardening or degrading. The material science has always been there. What changed is that product designers across EV, medical, and outdoor applications have finally caught up to what LSR can do.

Three Trending LSR Applications

EV battery cooling seals. Battery thermal management systems cycle between extreme temperatures repeatedly over a 10-year vehicle life. Seals must not harden, crack, or take compression set. Thermoset rubber and standard EPDM fail over this time frame. LSR does not.

Coffee machine internal valves. FDA food contact compliance, steam resistance, and cyclic fatigue from thousands of brew cycles put enormous demands on valve materials. LSR meets all three simultaneously, which is why it has become the default choice for premium coffee equipment manufacturers.

Outdoor lighting gaskets. LED fixtures exposed to sun, rain, and temperature cycling need seals that maintain compression set resistance for 15 or more years. LSR’s UV stability and elastic recovery make it the right material where EPDM or neoprene would degrade.

The Process Challenge Most Molders Get Wrong

LSR injection molding requires cold runner systems, precise temperature control across the mold and the runner separately, and exact shot volume control. The material cures in the mold under heat, not in the runner or barrel, which is the opposite of thermoplastic processing. Molders trained primarily on thermoplastics frequently struggle with shot consistency, flash control, and flash-free demolding of complex geometries.

Designer’s Guide to LSR

Minimum wall thickness for LSR is 0.5mm, compared to 1mm for solid silicone compression molding. Thinner sections are achievable but require careful gating and fill analysis.

Knit lines in complex flow paths are a quality risk. Where two flow fronts meet without adequate pressure, the bond is weaker and the surface shows a visible line. Gate placement should be designed to minimize flow meeting points, especially in sealing surfaces.

Shore hardness selection affects mold design. Softer grades (20A to 30A) are more difficult to demold cleanly from complex geometry. Design generous draft and consider automated demolding for production runs.

At NICE Rapid, LSR injection molding is fully automated to remove the human variables that cause shot-to-shot inconsistency. Part hardness is repeatable to within plus or minus 1 Shore A across the production run, which matters when your part is a sealing surface inside an EV battery pack or a medical device.
